Where to go in Maryland

Two things matter more than the exact spot: a horizon that is genuinely open to the north, and enough distance from town that the glow on that horizon is the aurora rather than streetlights. Water helps, because it doubles a weak display through reflection.

Why magnetic latitude decides this

The aurora is a ring around the magnetic north pole, which currently sits over the Canadian Arctic rather than at the top of the map. That tilt is why Maryland behaves like 48.3° rather than its map reading of 39°N, and why North America generally sees the aurora further south than Europe does at the same map latitude.
