Northern Lights in Sodankyla, Finland

Sodankyla is a small town of about 8,500 people in central Finnish Lapland, positioned about halfway between Rovaniemi and Inari on the E75 highway. What distinguishes Sodankyla from other Lapland destinations is its Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO), operated by the University of Oulu, which has been conducting aurora and geomagnetic research since 1914.

This scientific heritage means Sodankyla's aurora credentials are backed by over a century of data. The observatory records confirm that the town, at 67.42°N, sits in an excellent position for aurora viewing, needing only a KP index of 2. The surrounding landscape of forests, rivers, and open bogs provides varied and consistently dark viewing environments.

SGO Observatory Area: The outskirts near the observatory offer some of the area's darkest skies (the observatory itself requires dark conditions for its instruments). Views from the surrounding forest roads are excellent.

Luostotunturi Fell (toward Luosto): Driving south toward Luosto, the landscape opens into fell terrain with increasingly open views. The Luostotunturi area about 25 km south provides above-tree-line viewing.

Kitinen River: The frozen Kitinen river running through Sodankyla provides an open corridor for aurora viewing. River-bank viewpoints in and near town offer easy access without driving far.

Sompio Nature Reserve: Northeast of Sodankyla, this protected wilderness area offers pristine dark-sky conditions. Access points along Route 4 provide viewing over open bog and fell landscapes.

Sodankyla's aurora season runs from September through March:

September-October: Ruska autumn colors and returning darkness create beautiful conditions. The SGO data shows September and October bring frequent aurora activity. Temperatures 2°C to -8°C.

November-January: Polar twilight period with extended darkness. Sodankyla's inland position means colder but often clearer weather than coastal alternatives. Temperatures -15°C to -30°C.

February-March: The observatory's long-term data shows February-March as particularly active for aurora, aligning with the equinox effect. Clear, cold weather and deep snow make this the premium viewing period.

Getting There: Sodankyla has a small airport (SOT) with limited service. Most visitors fly to Rovaniemi (RVN, 2 hours drive south) or Ivalo (IVL, 1.5 hours drive north). Driving from Rovaniemi via E75 is straightforward.

Accommodation: Hotel Sodankylä is the main option in town. Wilderness lodges and cabins in the surrounding area offer more remote experiences. Luosto, about 25 km south, has more developed accommodation including the Aurora Chalet resort.

Visiting the Observatory: The SGO is primarily a research facility, but group visits can sometimes be arranged by prior appointment. The observatory's real-time magnetometer data is available online and provides precise local aurora activity readings - useful for planning your viewing nights.

Midnight Sun Film Festival: If you visit in June (outside aurora season), the film festival transforms Sodankyla into a unique cultural event where films are screened at midnight under the never-setting sun in a converted tent cinema. Founded in 1986, it attracts international filmmakers and cinema lovers.
