Northern Lights in Sortland, Norway

Sortland earned its nickname The Blue City (Den Blaa Byen) through an art project that saw many of its buildings painted in various shades of blue, giving the town a distinctive and whimsical character. Located at 68.69°N on the strait between the islands of Langoya and Hinnoya, Sortland is the administrative center of the Vesteralen archipelago and serves as a practical base for exploring the region's aurora opportunities.

With about 10,000 residents, Sortland offers good facilities including supermarkets, restaurants, and accommodation without the higher prices of more touristy destinations. The town sits at a geographic crossroads within Vesteralen, making it easy to reach various viewing locations in different directions depending on weather and cloud cover.

Sortland Bridge Area: The Sortland Bridge connects the two islands and offers views along the strait. The blue-lit buildings of the town create an unusual foreground for aurora photography, though moving away from town reduces light interference.

Jennestad Trading Post: A historic trading post about 15 km west of Sortland on Langoya, offering dark skies and a charming old Norwegian coastal settlement as foreground.

Strand Area: The coastal area along the road toward Andenes (Route 82 north) provides increasingly dark skies and open views. Multiple pull-off points offer good viewing and photography opportunities.

Bo Coastal Road: Heading south from Sortland along the coast of Langoya, the road passes through sparsely populated areas with excellent dark sky conditions and views across the fjords toward the mainland mountains.

Sortland's aurora season spans September through March, with viewing conditions influenced by the maritime Vesteralen climate:

September-October: Autumn brings the return of dark nights and the possibility of aurora combined with fall colors. The fishing industry keeps Sortland lively, and tourism is low, meaning accommodation is easy to find.

November-January: The darkest months with the sun barely rising above the horizon. While coastal weather can be unpredictable, cold snaps with clear skies produce excellent viewing. Sortland's central position makes it easy to drive in multiple directions chasing clear weather.

Getting There: The nearest airport is Stokmarknes Airport Skagen (SKN), just 30 minutes from Sortland, with flights from Bodo. Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes (EVE) is about 2 hours south. The Hurtigruten stops at both Sortland and nearby Stokmarknes. Driving from Narvik takes about 2 hours via the E10.

Base for Exploration: Sortland's central location makes it ideal for day trips across Vesteralen and beyond. Andenes (whales + aurora) is 1.5 hours north. Harstad is 45 minutes south. The scenic Route 82 to Andenes is one of Norway's National Tourist Routes.

Accommodation: Sortland Hotel is the main option in town. Several cabin and Airbnb options are available. Accommodation is generally more affordable than Lofoten or Tromso, making Sortland a budget-friendly aurora base.
