January sits at the heart of polar night above the Arctic Circle — the sun does not rise for weeks, temperatures plunge, and the sky is dark for up to 18 hours a day. January is the darkest month of the aurora year. At Tromsø (69.6°N), the sun does not rise at all during January — polar night runs from November 27 through January 15, meaning the entire month of January is either within polar night or just emerging from it. The practical effect is extraordinary: up to 18–20 hours of sky available for aurora observation every single day. Even a passing display that lasts 30 minutes is unlikely to be missed if you are awake.
The sky quality in January is exceptional. Cold, dry Arctic air masses dominate at inland destinations like Abisko and Finnish Lapland, producing some of the most transparent skies of the year. Atmospheric humidity is minimal, meaning aurora colours — the greens, purples, and reds produced by oxygen and nitrogen at different altitudes — appear saturated and vivid rather than washed out by moisture. Starfields visible behind active aurora are spectacular in January's cold, dry air.
Geomagnetically, January sits in the mid-winter period that is statistically below the equinox peaks of March and September. However, during the current Solar Cycle 25 maximum, elevated baseline activity means even mid-winter months see substantially more geomagnetic storm days than equivalent months in solar minimum years. Mid-January through late January is comparatively quiet. Guided tour availability improves, accommodation prices drop from their holiday peak, and popular dark-sky sites and viewing spots become less crowded. For visitors who want the polar night experience without competing with the holiday crowd, January 8–31 is the sweet spot.
Aurora photography in January benefits from specific conditions unique to the month. Snow coverage is at its maximum depth in most destinations, creating perfectly reflective surfaces for aurora light. Frozen lakes and fjords provide mirror-like ice surfaces that reflect overhead aurora when surface winds are calm. The complete absence of leaves on deciduous trees means unobstructed sky views in all directions from forested locations. January is a month that serious aurora photographers specifically target for these compositional advantages.
Planning a January Aurora Trip: Practical Details
A January aurora trip requires more preparation than any other month due to the extreme cold. At Abisko and Finnish Lapland, January temperatures regularly reach -25°C to -35°C, occasionally touching -40°C during strong cold snaps. This is genuinely extreme cold that can be dangerous without proper preparation, but it is also the cold that produces the clearest, most stable skies of the season.
Essential gear for January: merino wool or synthetic thermal base layers (never cotton, which retains moisture), insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), windproof and waterproof outer shell, insulated trousers, insulated boots rated to -40°C (Baffin or Sorel brands widely used), balaclava, hat, neck gaiter, and liner gloves inside heavier outer mitts. Hand and foot warmers are useful additions. Camera batteries should be kept inside a warm pocket between shots and only swapped into the camera for active shooting — cold drains lithium batteries rapidly. Carry 2–3 spare batteries per camera.
Best January destinations: Abisko (Aurora Sky Station, rain shadow clear skies, remote but accessible by night train from Stockholm), Saariselkä (glass igloo resorts, husky safaris, reindeer farms), Yellowknife (dedicated aurora viewing pods, guided tours, most accessible North American destination), and Tromsø (best infrastructure, most guided options, easiest flights from Europe). At above 68°N in January, even KP 2 is worth getting outside for on a clear night. Set aurora alert notifications so you do not sleep through an active display. The statistical peak for aurora intensity is still 10 PM–2 AM local time, but with 18+ hours of darkness available, displays outside this window are common and worth watching.

It has similar darkness (December has marginally more at the solstice, but the difference is minor), better weather stability (December is cloudiest at coastal destinations), and dramatically lower prices and crowds after the holiday period ends January 7. The polar night experience is fully available throughout January at all Arctic Circle destinations.
January vs February: February edges January for overall aurora quality due to the pre-equinox geomagnetic build that begins in mid-to-late February. But January's longer darkness hours (14–16 hours at Tromsø vs 13–14 in February) compensate somewhat. For photographers who want maximum time under dark skies, January is arguably superior; for aurora chasers wanting maximum storm frequency, February is slightly better. Both months are excellent at high-latitude destinations.
January vs September: These months are very different experiences. January has more darkness but lower geomagnetic activity; September has an equinox-boosted geomagnetic peak but less darkness (8–10 hours). January is the winter immersive experience; September is the autumn colour plus aurora experience. For pure aurora probability per clear hour of darkness, September may edge January due to the equinox effect; for total aurora viewing opportunity per trip, January's longer nights give it an edge. Choose based on which experience you want, not just the statistics.
