Northern Lights in Saariselka, Finland

Saariselka is a small fell resort in the municipality of Inari, about 260 km north of the Arctic Circle. The resort sits at the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of Finland's largest protected wilderness areas (2,550 km²). The surrounding landscape of open fells (tunturi), birch forests, and frozen rivers provides a quintessentially Finnish Lapland setting for aurora viewing.

At 68.41°N, Saariselka needs only a KP index of 2 for aurora activity. The resort's position on the northern edge of the boreal forest means the landscape transitions from forest to open fell, giving varied viewing environments. The famous Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort with its glass igloos is nearby, offering one of Finland's most iconic aurora experiences.

Saariselka provides good tourist infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, ski lifts) while remaining surrounded by genuine wilderness. Check the aurora forecast and head to the fells for the best viewing.

Kaunispää Fell: The highest point in the Saariselka area (438m), accessible by road or ski lift. The summit provides panoramic views above the tree line in every direction. On clear nights, aurora stretching from horizon to horizon can be observed without any obstruction.

Laanila: A small settlement about 10 km north of Saariselka on Route E75, offering very dark skies and views into the Urho Kekkonen wilderness. The frozen Luttojoki river provides an open viewing corridor.

Rumakuru Gorge Trail: A maintained trail leading into the national park. While the full trail is a summer activity, the initial sections are accessible in winter and lead to dark, sheltered spots perfect for aurora viewing in the forest setting.

Gold Panning Area: The Tankavaara gold panning area, about 30 km south of Saariselka, sits in a broad valley with excellent dark-sky conditions. The historic gold prospecting village adds cultural interest.

Saariselka's aurora season runs from September through March:

September-October: Ruska (autumn colors) in late September transforms the fell landscape into fiery reds and oranges. This is one of the most photogenic times for aurora in Finnish Lapland - the combination of autumn birch forests and green aurora is stunning. Temperatures 2°C to -8°C.

November-January: The kaamos period brings extended darkness. Cross-country skiing on illuminated trails provides daytime activity, while the surrounding wilderness offers pristine aurora viewing. Temperatures -15°C to -30°C.

February-March: The best period for aurora viewing in Saariselka. High-pressure systems bringing clear, cold weather are most common. The snow-covered fells gleam in the returning sunlight during the day, while nights deliver aurora. The equinox effect in March enhances activity.

Getting There: Ivalo Airport (IVL) is about 25 minutes south. Daily flights from Helsinki (1.5 hours). Driving from Rovaniemi takes about 3 hours via E75. Regular bus service from Ivalo and Rovaniemi.

Glass Igloos: Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, about 15 minutes south of Saariselka, is one of the world's most famous aurora accommodation experiences. Their glass igloos (and the newer Kelo-Glass Igloos) offer aurora viewing from heated beds. Reserve 6-12 months in advance. Star Arctic Hotel offers a similar experience closer to the resort center.

Activities: Cross-country skiing (Saariselka has 200+ km of trails), downhill skiing at Kaunispää, husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobile excursions, ice fishing, and gold panning at Tankavaara. The amethyst mine at nearby Luosto is a unique day trip.

National Park: Urho Kekkonen National Park offers wilderness hiking and skiing. In winter, maintained trails lead to wilderness huts where you can shelter while watching for aurora. A day hike into the park followed by an evening of aurora viewing is a perfect Saariselka itinerary.
