Northern Lights in Levi, Finland

Levi is Finland's largest and most developed ski resort, centered around the Levi Fell (531 meters) in the municipality of Kittila. With 43 slopes, 28 lifts, and extensive cross-country trails, it's a serious winter sports destination that also happens to be one of Finnish Lapland's best aurora viewing locations.

At 67.80°N, Levi sits well above the Arctic Circle and needs only a KP index of 2 for aurora activity. The resort's position in a wide valley surrounded by open fell landscape means that once you move away from the resort village lights, excellent dark-sky conditions are within minutes. The combination of daytime skiing and nighttime aurora viewing makes Levi uniquely appealing for active travelers.

The resort village itself is well-developed with dozens of restaurants, bars, shops, and accommodation options ranging from hostels to luxury chalets. Levi Summit: The gondola lift to the top of Levi Fell sometimes operates for special aurora evenings, offering panoramic views above the tree line. Immeljärvi Lake: A frozen lake just south of the resort village, easily accessible on foot or by ski. The open expanse of the frozen lake provides 360-degree sky views, and the surrounding forest creates a classic Lapland frame for aurora photography.

Köngäs Village: A small traditional Lapland village about 20 minutes from the resort, offering very dark skies and a genuine rural atmosphere. The wooden buildings and snow-covered fields create authentic Finnish foregrounds.

Road to Muonio: The road west from Levi toward Muonio passes through pristine fell landscape with numerous viewpoints. The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park boundary is within reach, offering protected wilderness dark-sky viewing.

Levi's aurora season overlaps with the ski season, running from September through March (skiing continues into May):

October-November: The ski season opens in October with early snowfall. Aurora viewing is excellent with increasing darkness. November brings polar twilight and consistent snow cover.

December-January: Peak darkness with only 1-2 hours of twilight. The ski resort operates with floodlights (which means light pollution from the slopes). However, areas just beyond the resort boundary are dark. Christmas and New Year are very busy and expensive.

February-March: The optimal period combining good skiing conditions, returning daylight for slope visibility, and active aurora. Clear, cold high-pressure weather is more common. March's equinox effect often boosts geomagnetic activity. This is when regulars visit.

Getting There: Kittilä Airport (KTT) is just 15 minutes from Levi. Direct flights from Helsinki operate daily (1.5 hours), with seasonal direct flights from many European cities. Airport transfers to the resort are well-organized.

Accommodation: Levi offers everything from hostels and apartments to luxury chalets and glass igloo experiences. Zero Point: The Zero Point spa and activity center on the summit offers a unique heated outdoor pool at elevation. Some visitors have seen aurora from the warm pool while surrounded by snow-covered fells.
