Sisimiut at 66.94°N sits just above the Arctic Circle, requiring only a KP index of 2 for visible aurora. Greenland's second-largest town (population ~5,600) offers a vibrant community with a strong outdoor culture and excellent dark-sky conditions.
What distinguishes Sisimiut is the combination of aurora viewing with Arctic adventure sports. The town is Greenland's center for cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, dog sledding, and mountaineering. Winter visitors can spend days pursuing adrenaline-fueled activities and evenings watching the northern lights.
The surrounding landscape of fjords, mountains, and tundra provides diverse viewing settings. The Arctic Circle Trail — Greenland's most famous hiking route — connects Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq through 165 km of pristine wilderness, passing through some of the darkest sky conditions on Earth.
Aurora Viewing Around Sisimiut
The mountains directly behind town provide accessible elevated viewpoints. A short hike above the settlement puts you above the modest town lights with panoramic views of the fjord, sea, and sky. Several marked winter trails lead to excellent vantage points.
Nasaasaaq Mountain, Sisimiut's iconic peak, offers a challenging but rewarding ascent with views extending across Davis Strait. The frozen Kangerluarsuk Tulleq Fjord north of town provides a vast open surface for aurora viewing with mountain frames on both sides.
Dog sled and snowmobile tours reach remote backcountry locations where light pollution is absolutely zero. Several operators offer evening aurora excursions combined with traditional camp experiences.
Getting to Sisimiut
Sisimiut Airport receives flights from Kangerlussuaq (25 minutes) and other Greenlandic towns via Air Greenland. The Arctic Circle Trail connects Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq on foot (summer only). Arctic Umiaq Line coastal ferry stops at Sisimiut on its route between Ilulissat and Nuuk.
The town has hotels, guesthouses, and a hostel, plus restaurants and well-stocked shops. Hotel Sisimiut is the main accommodation option. Prices are lower than Ilulissat but still high by international standards.
Winter temperatures range from -10°C to -25°C, with coastal winds adding chill. The active outdoor culture means excellent winter clothing and equipment are available for rent from local outfitters.
