Northern Lights in Narvik, Norway

Narvik sits at the head of the Ofotfjord, one of northern Norway's most dramatic waterways, at 68.43°N latitude. The town is hemmed in by steep mountains on all sides, creating a natural amphitheater that frames aurora displays in a way few other locations can match. When the northern lights appear above Narvik, they're reflected in the fjord's still waters while mountain silhouettes add depth and drama to every photograph.

The town gained historical significance during World War II, when the Battles of Narvik (April-June 1940) saw intense fighting between Allied and German forces for control of the vital iron ore shipping port. Today, the Narvik War Museum tells this powerful story, while the town has reinvented itself as a center for outdoor adventure and aurora tourism.

Narvikfjellet (Narvik Mountain): The Narvikfjellet cable car takes you 656 meters above the town in just minutes. During aurora season, special evening openings offer one of the most elevated and spectacular aurora viewpoints in northern Norway. The panoramic view from the top encompasses the Ofotfjord, the Lofoten wall, and endless mountain ranges.

Ofoten Museum Area: Located along the waterfront south of the town center, this area offers dark fjord waters in the foreground with minimal light interference. The old buildings of the museum provide interesting foreground elements for photography.

Bjerkvik: A small community about 15 minutes north of Narvik along the E6. The shores of the Herjangsfjord here offer wide-open views with very little light pollution and easy car access.

The E6 Highway South: Driving south from Narvik along the Ofotfjord, numerous pull-off points offer dark sky viewing with fjord and mountain panoramas. The road to Abisko via the E10 also provides excellent roadside viewing opportunities.

The aurora season in Narvik spans September through March, coinciding with the ski season at Narvikfjellet:

October-November: Rapidly increasing darkness with the first significant snowfall. The mountains around Narvik catch early snow, creating white peaks that reflect aurora light beautifully. Temperatures hover around -2°C to -8°C.

December-February: The darkest months, with the sun barely rising above the mountains even at midday. The ski resort operates with floodlights, but the surrounding wilderness is plunged into darkness ideal for aurora. Cold, clear high-pressure systems from the east occasionally bring stunning viewing conditions.

Getting There: Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes (EVE) is located about 80 km (1 hour drive) from Narvik. Daily flights connect to Oslo, Tromso, and Bodo. The E6 highway connects Narvik to Tromso (3.5 hours north) and Bodo (4 hours south). The E10 leads east to Abisko and Kiruna in Sweden (2-3 hours).

Skiing + Aurora: Narvikfjellet offers downhill skiing with fjord views - one of the most scenic ski experiences in the world. The combination of daytime skiing and nighttime aurora viewing makes Narvik particularly attractive for active travelers. Season runs December through May.
