Glass Igloos in Norway
Northern Norway has the best latitude of any easy aurora destination and the least reliable sky. The Gulf Stream that makes January bearable at 69°N is the same thing that keeps the coast under cloud, and choosing coast or inland is the decision that actually matters.
The best latitude of the three, and the catch
Northern Norway sits at 68 to 71°N, deep inside the auroral oval. Tromsø works out to about 67° magnetic, which means Kp 2 puts the aurora overhead rather than on the horizon. On the geomagnetic numbers alone, Norway beats both Finland and Iceland.
The catch is the Gulf Stream. It is the reason Tromsø sits at -4°C in January while Yellowknife at the same latitude hits -30°C, and it is a genuinely pleasant thing to stand outside in. It is also the reason the coast is cloudy. Warm water under cold air makes cloud, continuously, all winter.
So Norway hands you the best sky in the region and then covers it up. The whole game is picking a spot where that happens least.
Coast versus inland, which is the real decision
The coast means Tromsø, Lofoten, Senja and Vesterålen. Mountains rising out of water, fishing villages, the scenery that put Norway on every aurora list. It is also where the cloud is worst. Tromsø averages something like one clear night in three across the season.
Inland means Alta, Karasjok and the Finnmark plateau. Less dramatic to look at, colder, and considerably drier. Alta sits far enough from the coast that Atlantic systems have weakened by the time they arrive, and it built the world's first aurora observatory in 1899 for exactly that reason.
If you want the photograph with the fjord and the peaks, take the coast and accept the odds. If you want to see the aurora, go inland. Most people book the coast and then spend their evenings in a minibus being driven inland by a guide who already knows this.
That is worth understanding before you book. Tromsø's aurora tour industry exists because Tromsø's weather is unreliable. The guides routinely drive two or three hours, sometimes crossing into Finland, to find a gap. If you are staying in a fixed glass cabin on the coast, you cannot do that.
What Norway gives you that the others do not
Terrain through the glass. A Lapland cabin looks out on flat spruce forest. A Lofoten cabin looks out on peaks coming straight out of the sea. When the aurora does show, the picture is better.
Overhead displays rather than horizon arcs. At 69°N a moderate night puts the aurora directly above you, and coronas, where rays converge at the zenith, become realistic rather than rare. That is the thing a glass roof is actually built for.
Reachability. Tromsø has direct flights from several European cities and is a real city of 77,000 with restaurants and a hospital, not a resort. You can combine an aurora trip with something else.
Whales. From late October to January, orcas and humpbacks follow the herring into the fjords around Skjervøy and Tromsø. Nowhere else in the aurora world can you do that on the same trip.
Practical notes
Norway is expensive, more so than Finland or Iceland. Budget 1,500 to 2,500 NOK a night for a mid-range room and 2,500 to 5,000 for a glass cabin. Eating out runs 250 to 400 NOK for a main. This is not a place where you save money by winging it.
The season runs late September to late March. Polar night at Tromsø runs 21 November to 21 January, when the sun does not clear the horizon at all. That sounds ideal and is a mixed blessing: you get more dark hours but midwinter is also the cloudiest stretch.
February and March are the better months. Weather stabilises, the light returns enough that you can do things during the day, and the spring equinox drives activity up. March in Norway is the single best combination of odds and daylight in the region.
Hire a car if you can drive on ice, and take studded tyres. It converts a cloudy night from a write-off into a two-hour drive.

Mostly around Tromsø, Lofoten, Senja and Alta, between 68 and 70°N. The coastal ones near Tromsø and Lofoten have the better scenery, and the inland ones around Alta and the Finnmark plateau have meaningfully more clear nights because Atlantic weather has weakened by the time it reaches them.
Norway is higher latitude with better views through the glass, so the aurora is more often overhead rather than on the horizon. Finland has drier air and more clear nights. If you want the best odds of seeing something, Finland. If you want the best photograph when it happens, Norway.
Kp 2 is enough for a visible display, and Kp 3 or more puts it overhead. Tromsø sits at roughly 67° magnetic latitude, inside the auroral oval, so geomagnetic activity is rarely the limiting factor. Cloud cover is.
Cloudy enough that the local tour industry is built around driving away from it. Roughly one night in three is clear on the coast. The Gulf Stream that keeps Tromsø at about -4°C in January is the same thing that generates the cloud, so the mild weather and the poor visibility have the same cause.
March. Long dark nights are still available, the weather is more settled than midwinter, the spring equinox pushes geomagnetic activity up, and enough daylight has returned to do things during the day. February is a close second. December has the longest nights and the worst weather.
