Ivalo is a small village of about 3,500 people on the banks of the Ivalojoki river at 68.66°N. Its significance for aurora tourism lies primarily in its airport - Ivalo Airport (IVL) is the main air access point for the Saariselkä, Inari, and Nellim aurora destinations. But Ivalo itself is also an excellent viewing location.

At 68.66°N, Ivalo needs only a KP index of 1 for aurora activity. The village sits along the Ivalojoki river, which flows into Lake Inari. Aurora Viewing Near Ivalo

Ivalojoki River: The frozen river provides an open viewing corridor through the forested landscape. Several access points within and near the village offer easy dark-sky viewing.

Getting to Ivalo

Getting There: Ivalo Airport (IVL) has daily flights from Helsinki (1.5 hours) plus seasonal direct flights from European cities. The airport is small and efficient - you can be at your hotel within minutes of landing.

Onward Connections: Saariselkä is 25 minutes south, Inari is 40 minutes north, and Nellim is about 45 minutes east. Airport shuttles and rental cars are available.

Accommodation: Hotel Ivalo is the main option, with riverside rooms. Several cabins and guesthouses serve the village. Most visitors continue to Saariselkä or Inari for accommodation, but staying in Ivalo itself offers a quieter, more authentic Lapland experience.
